3 Maine West Photography Students Honored at Barrington Photography Exhibit #207Now #arteducation @mainewestfab @mainewestart

Three Maine West photography students earned distinguished honors at Barrington's Photography Competition. This show was the brainchild of a Barrington High School student, Sophia Wischmeyer, who wanted to organize an event to showcase excellence in high school photography.

In its inaugural year, the Barrington Photography Exhibit had a theme of "Cinematic & Narrative Shots," and they hosted an awards night on Thursday, March 20th at Barrington High School in the Clair E. Smith Gallery.

The three Maine West students who earned awards are:

Addy DeRusha earned Judge's Choice
Callie Weinert earned 3rd Place Overall
Nathan Velasco earned Judge's Choice

12 schools from around the area participated in this exhibit. Congratulations to Addy, Callie and Nathan and their photography teacher, Ms. Melissa Lloyd!

Guest Speaker Kelly Fitzgerald Visits Photography Classes #CareersInArt #207Now #artsed #photography @mainewestart

Guest speaker, Kelly Fitzgerald, a Maine West Alumna and local professional photographer with her own portrait studio, The Fitzgerald Studio, visited Ms. Lloyd's photography classes this past week. She talked with students about the business aspect of being a photographer and running an independent, small business. Working as an artist is a viable and lucrative career path, but requires multi-faceted skills and a lot of time and energy spent on "non-art" tasks. Some of the topics she introduced to the students included: branding, marketing, sales, customer service and customer satisfaction.

After the lesson on running a business, Ms. Fitzgerald taught a lesson on studio lighting because Maine West Photography students are just about to start their studio portrait unit.

Thank you, Ms. Fitzgerald, for sharing your time, knowledge and talents with the students of Maine West! Thank you to Ms. Lloyd for arranging this career connection opportunity for our Fine Arts students!
